SCORE 2 - TACTILE INSTRUMENTS

As dancers and/ or artists we have a tendency to allow our visual stimulus to guide our creativity but why? Our sight can only generate an abstract noticing, it is our sense of touch and movement which transforms it into a reality through our concrete experience and the liminal process with our instruments. For dancers this is our bodies and for artists it is our materials, something many take for granted. It is this concept we are looking at for this score, almost stripping back influences and returning to rediscover ourselves and our instruments through tactile noticing and use it to generate embodied movement and art. Now this process will vary due to each discipline so please select the one you wish to work with either ‘art’ or ‘dance’, however if you are a cross disciplinary artist you may want to select the final option ‘mixed media’. Before you begin please listen to 'Acclimatising the body' recording in order to open up your tactile palette to receive touch and do not forget to film yourselves and (for artists) take photos to send to me in an email and fill out the form at the bottom of the page. Again, you can find my email address at the bottom of the form to send the footage and images. Finally just enjoy the process and get creative.

BEGIN THE EXPERIENCE

DANCERS:

Your instrument is your body. You may touch, feel and make contact with your own body however you wish, whether that be tracing, imprinting, varying pressure, specific location or accidental touch. Just explore the body and allow it to move you.

How might touch go deeper than the skin?
ARTISTS:
Your instruments for this score are your materials where you will use the sensations of how they feel in your hands, against the paper and how they layer to guide your art. If an image does come up for you derived by the sense of touch you can choose to follow it but you must keep the sense of touch alive by ensuring the materials guide the way you approach this.
What are the textures like?
MIXED MEDIA:
You will explore with both tactile sensations including touching the body using tracing, imprinting, varying pressure, specific location or accidental touch and the sense of touch with materials through your hands, against the paper or between one another. You can do this in any order you wish or perhaps you do them simultaneously leaving a trace. The choice is yours! Remember to keep drawing back to touch and allow that to guide you.
How does touch infiltrate our body?
